About
Drum Lessons
Looking for drum lessons in Halifax? Welcome to RAW Studios — a dedicated music school where you can learn from professional working musicians with real-world experience.
Drumming isn’t just something we teach. It’s something we live.
For more than 18 years, RAW Studios has helped drummers of all ages and abilities develop their playing, from complete beginners picking up sticks for the first time to experienced players looking to take their technique, control and musicality to a higher level.
Learn From World-Class Drum Tutors
At RAW, you’re not simply learning from someone who knows how to play the drums. Our tutors are experienced professional musicians who have studied with, worked alongside and learned from some of the best drummers and educators in the world.
That experience gets passed on to our students.
We believe that great drumming tuition should go beyond simply learning songs. It’s about developing timing, technique, control, dynamics, musicality and confidence — the skills that allow you to become a better drummer in any situation.
Drum Lessons for All Ages and Abilities
Whether you’re completely new to the drums, returning to playing after many years or already an experienced drummer, our lessons are built around your individual goals.
Our beginner drum lessons give you the foundations you need to develop good technique and confidence from the start.
For more experienced players, our advanced drum lessons can focus on technique, speed, stamina, independence, groove, fills, improvisation, reading, playing to a click and developing your own individual sound.
We also cover a huge range of musical styles, from rock and pop through to funk, jazz, blues, metal, fusion and beyond.
Students Travel to RAW From Across the Country
One of the things we’re particularly proud of is the distance some of our students are prepared to travel to learn at RAW Studios.
We have students who travel to Halifax from all over the UK because they want access to specialist drum tuition and tutors with genuine professional experience.
And our teaching doesn’t stop at the doors of our Halifax studios.
Through online drum lessons, we now work with students from around the world, allowing drummers to access our tuition wherever they are.
Whether you’re travelling to Halifax for an in-person lesson or joining us online from another part of the world, you’ll receive the same commitment to quality, detail and progression.
More Than Just Drum Lessons
At RAW, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
Some students want to learn their favourite songs. Some want to play in a band. Some want to work towards grades. Others want to become professional musicians.
And some experienced drummers simply want to break through a technical barrier that’s been holding them back for years.
Our lessons are adapted to where you are now and where you want your drumming to go.
After more than 30 years of teaching drums, we’ve found that even experienced players can often make huge improvements by going back to the fundamentals — particularly technique, control, timing and efficiency.
Pay attention to the details. Practice hard. Play easy.
That’s the approach we bring to our drum tuition.
A Dedicated Music School Since 2008
RAW Studios isn’t a teacher working from a spare room at home.
We are a dedicated music school, established in 2008, with professional teaching facilities and a team of working musicians.
We’ve spent years building an environment where musicians can learn, develop and enjoy making music.
And our reputation has been built through the students we’ve taught, the musicians we’ve worked with and the results we see every week.
What Our Students Say
Don’t just take our word for it.
Our students and parents have left hundreds of reviews and recommendations over the years, reflecting their experiences of learning at RAW Studios.
★★★★★ Google Reviews

We believe the best recommendation isn’t something we can say about ourselves — it’s what our students say after they’ve experienced the lessons.

“For anyone wanting tuition in the UK , I heartily recommend checking out Rich, a well run and highly pro set up”
Steve White
British Drumming legend
After the first five years of drumming, the path led me to Rich. An expert in technique, inspiration and honesty. I couldn’t be more grateful to have spent my formative years as a drummer under his tuition. 15 years later I’m still relying on the first things he taught me.
Oscar Ogden
“As a drummer for 20 years, and a teacher for 10, I’d been looking for a teacher to freshen me up. I’d been to three teachers with a particular problem and not had any success. In a tea break during a weekend drum session, Richard solved the problem. Despite Richard being 50 miles away I’ve driven to him for lessons. He’s given me the tools to push on, made practising enjoyable, effortless and effective. In short, he changed my playing and is the reason why I haven’t given up playing. I recommend Richard to anyone that wants to improve, regardless of their type of music”
Aidan Poland
“As a full-time working Drummer and Percussionist it’s always a hard thing to swallow your pride and say to yourself there’s so much more you can learn and work on. Rich is the guy to get in touch with, if you were like me and stuck in a bit of a rut! He’s completely restructured my technique and has so much knowledge on developing creativity! His lessons have been a game changer!”
Pete Mitchell
“Richard Is a very patient and supportive teacher, with the ability to get the best out of his students. He will take into account your specific goals for improvement on your drumming journey, whether you are a complete novice or more advanced. When i have a lesson with Rich i always feel so much better about my drumming, and feel that i can achieve much more than i previously thought. 5 Stars!!”
Dionne
“Every lesson I have with Rich is always an inspiring one, every lesson I take something new away from the lesson that helps me progress as a drummer to improve my ability. Rich is a very inspiring tutor that will help you reach your ability to play and then push you even further. Every lesson that I have with Rich is a great lesson, he is one of my top inspirations to play drums. I have been with him for nearly 3 years now and I have learnt so much from every lesson i’ve had. He has helped me to push my drumming to a new level. Rich is a fantastic drummer and a great person to have lessons with.”
Molly Williams
“Rich is a great teacher, anyone looking at getting some guidance or improving as a player should check him out. Great facilities with great teaching outlook”
